Down Syndrome Creed
My face may be different but my feelings the same.
I laugh and I cry and take pride in my gains.
I was sent here among you to teach and to love
as God in the heavens looks down from above.
To Him I'm no different, His love knows no bounds
It's those here among you in cities and towns
that judge me by standards that man has imparted,
But this family I've chosen will help me get started.
For I'm one of the children so special and few
that came here to learn the same lesson as you.
That love is acceptance, it must come from the heart;
we all have the same purpose, though not the same start.
The Lord gave me life to live and embrace,
and I'll do it as you do but at my own pace.

Did You Know . . . Down Syndrome is Not a Downer
* Down Syndrome ("DS") was discovered in 1959, but was named after Dr. Down who first described its traits in 1866.
* DS is an extra copy of Chromosome 21.
* There are different types of DS. The most common is "Trisomy 21" in which the cell nuclei has the extra copy. As cells divide, the extra copy is duplicated. (Jake has this type.)
* An extra copy of a Chromosome 21 results in similar traits, akin to traits for blue eyes or brown hair.
* There is more to a person with DS than their traits.
* People with DS have unique medical issues because of their unique cells.
* Because knowledge and research of DS is so new, the quality of life for people with DS has increased significantly in recent years.
* DSAF Nebraska opens doors to DS awareness.
