News you can use!

Hello Buddy Walk supporters!

WOW!!! What an amazing day!!!!

Thanks to you and approximately 7,000 of your closest friends for coming
together to celebrate all the abilities of individuals with Down
syndrome at our 2016 Houston Buddy Walk!

Your attendance made this event a huge success!! We hope that you and your team
had fun, got to visit with friends, got information from our vendors and
enjoyed the new venue at the Sam Houston Race Park!

General consensus was that everyone enjoyed the openness of the event with our vendors inside, rides in a secure area and a stage layout for entertainment.  We are reviewing and still looking  for feedback  on how we can continue to improve the event for you, so please send us your feedback to buddywalk@dsah.org  There was lots of time put into planning the event including the walking route. We are looking at what can be done to improve the walking surface on the track in hopes to make it more stroller and wheelchair friendly.

To all of our sponsors, DSAH Board of Directors, Buddy Walk Committee, staff, vendors, food trucks, DJ's, entertainment, emcee, volunteers,  and everyone who put in all of their efforts - THANK YOU!

Thanks Paul Gallant from Sports Radio 610 for emceeing our event!

We are gathering all of our pictures so we can post on social media.  If you would like to share them with DSAH - please tag us!

Facts About Down Syndrome

  • Down syndrome occurs when an individual has three, rather than two, copies of the 21st chromosome. This additional genetic material alters the course of development and causes the characteristics associated with Down syndrome.
  • Down syndrome is the most commonly occurring chromosomal abnormality. One in every 691 babies is born with Down syndrome.
  • There are more than 400,000 people living with Down syndrome in the United States.
  • Down syndrome affects people of all ages, races and economic levels.
  • All people with Down syndrome experience cognitive delays, but the effect is usually mild to moderate and is not indicative of the many strengths and talents that each individual possesses.
  • Quality educational programs, a stimulating home environment, good health care, and positive support from family, friends and the community enable people with Down syndrome to develop their full potential and lead fulfilling lives.
  • People with Down syndrome have an increased risk for certain medical conditions such as congenital heart defects, respiratory and hearing problems, Alzheimer's disease, childhood leukemia, and thyroid conditions. Many of these conditions are now treatable, so most people with Down syndrome lead healthy lives.
  • Life expectancy for people with Down syndrome has increased dramatically in recent decades - from 25 in 1983 to 56 today.
  • People with Down syndrome attend school, find work, participate in decisions that affect them, and contribute to society.
  • Researchers are making great strides in identifying the genes on Chromosome 21 that cause the characteristics of Down syndrome. Many feel strongly that it will be possible to improve, correct or prevent many of the problems associated with Down syndrome in the future
